Marvel superheroes spend more and more time on screen

The latest blockbusters have largely put forward The Wasp, Shuri, Gamora …

Fans of comics spend a lot of time peeling off blockbusters inspired by the adventures of their favorite superheroes. In particular, the Marvel Cinematic Universe super-movies, which have been growing in popularity since the release of Iron Man in 2008. A few weeks ago, it was discovered that the characters who caused the most deaths were not necessarily those who we believed.

A new study of a certain “Ninewheels”, posted on IMDb and relayed by Digital Spy , looks at the time spent on screen by heroines. Illustrated film by film, this analysis on the representation of female figures is inspired by Bechdel’s test, but by proposing a broader observation: there is no question here of dialogue or of importance in history, but simply the duration of exposure during a film. The result clearly shows that over time, Gamora, Black Widow, Shuri and their sisters were treated to more screen time . Yet, it took 11 years for Marvel to finally release a super-movie worn by a woman, Captain Marvel, which is played by Brie Larson and will arrive on the screens on March 6th.

Here are some detailed figures: between 2008 and 2011, it was mostly the male superheroes who were in the spotlight: Iron Man, then, then Hulk, Captain America or Thor, who each had their “original story” , but end up here at the bottom of the list. The First Avengers is the feature film of the MCU where women are least present. Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is best seen for 17 minutes and 15 seconds, which is less than 14% of the movie’s length. In the first Iron Man , they appear only 27 minutes, 21.42% of the time, and it is mainly Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) who is there for 23 minutes. The other actress who appears on the screen is Christine Everhart, during 3 minutes 45.

The more time passes, the more heroines make their appearance alongside the heroes, including Gamora (Zoe Saldana), very present in The Guardians of the Galaxy , his sequel, and Avengers Infinity War . The three films featuring the most female characters are all released in 2018. The winner is The Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), which was not very visible in the first part of Ant-Man(15:45), but caught up well in the last installment, released last summer. In addition to having her name attached to the hero in the title, she was there for 35 minutes, a record for all heroines. His mom Janet, a new opponent, Ava Starr, Scott’s daughter, Cassie, and his ex-wife, Maggie, were also seen. In all, female figures were on screen for 55% of the time, or 65 minutes.

The second film of the top is Black Panther , in which the king of Wakanda was surrounded by strong women, like his mother Ramonda, his sister Shuri, and the warriors Nakia, Okoye and Ayo. Actresses Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia Wright and Angela Bassett share 54 minutes of screen time.

It is Avengers Infinity War who completes the podium thanks to 51 minutes of “screen time” divided into ten heroines. Gamora is the one we see the most (19:30), followed by Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), who is there 9 minutes and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) for 4.45 minutes. Some are finally not very present (Shuri, 1min, Pepper Potts, 1 min 30), but added, their time of presence is equivalent to 34% of the film (remember that Infinity War lasts 2h29).
